Morchella was my Junior year casegoods project in the Spring of 2023. The brief stated that I design and build a cabinet with concealed storage that addresses a contemporary problem. It needed to be production oriented, marketable to a wider audience, and economically reproducible. I began my ideation process by focusing on niche use cases and historical pieces of cabinetry that are no longer popular. This led me to Valet Stands, or a “Gentleman’s Valet,” which is a piece of furniture that traditionally acts as a place to hold valuables and your business attire. I aimed to update the purpose and versatility of a Valet Stand for modern use, along with enhancing the aesthetics of what is essentially just a clothing rack. Through studying fungal structures, especially that of the true morel mushroom, I found inspiration in cavities and rounded forms that became simplified and implemented into the stylization for my cabinet.
