Sju Planters

Second runner-up for Davis Furniture’s sponsored studio competition with Appalachian State University. “Sju” is the Swedish word for seven, which is the number of sides each planter has. The heptagonal forms create depth and dimension in any given environment, with added cohesion if multiple are placed throughout the space. Each unit offers an opportunity to display a variety of different plants, with the largest providing the option to be utilized as an occasional table. Created with foam core and wooden dowels, this series of planters are a rapid-prototype model inspired by Davis Furniture’s Elements line.

In collaboration with Davis Furniture, based in High Point, NC, my class worked on a ten-week project focused on creating designs for Davis’ Elements line of interior accessories. Students were separated into four item categories, with my assigned object being a planter. Working closely with Davis Furniture, we presented ideas through all stages of design development, including research and initial concept drawings. Using feedback from these critiques, I was able to better focus on further market research and design, culminating in construction documents, renderings, rapid prototypes, and a final client presentation. It was an extremely competitive and enlightening project that provided a better understanding of the furniture design career field.
